Augustinian Saint Banners

These are a set of 6 banners that were designed for Merrimack College's chapel, Austin Hall Chapel. Since the school is an Augustinian Catholic College, me and a few fellow colleagues were tasked to make banners that represent 6 Augustinian saints: Saint Rita of Cascia, Saint Nicholas of Tolentine, Saint. Clare of Montefalco, Saint Monica of Thagaste, Blessed Stephen Bellesini, and Saint Thomas of Villanova.

I was inspired by stained glass windows, the Renaissance period, and the Baroque period. Stained glass was my biggest inspiration and I wanted the banners to look like they were made of stained glass themselves. Then when it comes to the Renaissance, I noticed red, blue, and yellow were some of the main colors used. I ended up deciding that I wanted these 3 colors to be the main colors I used. This helped with making the 6 banners unified while also able to differentiate them. Finally, with the Baroque period, I'm mostly inspired by the high contrast that was used a lot in those pieces. I tried to add high contrast myself when coloring in and shading the banners so that they really resembled light shining through stained glass.

These banner designs are now produced and made into physical banners that get hung within Austin Hall Chapel and are a part of Merrimack College's permanent art collection.
